Olympus PEN E-PL5 and PEN E-PM2 Hands-on Preview: Digital Photography Review

Being enthusiast photographers ourselves, and having really liked the OM-D, we were perhaps a bit disappointed that the latest PENs don't provide all the same capabilities for around half the price. But, of course, it would be disastrous for Olympus if they did. If they live up to the promise and manage to offer an approachable shooting experience for beginners, with the E-M5's excellent image quality, in some of the smallest and least expensive models on the market, then it's far too early to write-off the PENs.

Olympus PEN E-PL5 review

The PEN E-PL5 is a fourth-generation Micro Four Thirds mirror-less compact system camera and its maturity shows - in a good way. As the middle choice in a range of three PENs, in many ways it combines the best of the enthusiast PEN E-P3 and the entry-level PEN 'Mini' E-PM2 with a great balance between size, ease of use and control.

Olympus E-PL5 review | Digital Camera World

Overall, the E-PL5 is a great camera, combining some of the best technology from its critically acclaimed OM-D, with the stylish and compact bodies the PEN series have become known for.

Olympus E-PL5 review | T3

The Olympus is also more reasonably priced at first glance for someone trading up from a simple snapshot camera to one with interchangeable lenses for the first time. With response times a match for most DSLRs too, there's comparatively little to find fault with when it comes to the E-PL5. That means that if you do find a good deal going, it can be considered a sound buy.

Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5 Review

The camera's image quality is vastly improved over the previous PEN cameras, inheriting the 16 megapixel sensor from the Olympus OM-D E-M5, and image quality is excellent with the 14-42mm MK II lens delivering sharp photos and excellent Olympus colour. Noise performance is the best it's ever been from a Micro Four Thirds camera, with usable ISO up to and including ISO6400.

Olympus E-Pl5 Review: Overview

Olympus has gotten just about everything right with the new E-PL5 ILC camera. Its 16-Megapixel Live MOS sensor and TruePic VI provide excellent image quality and performance. Adding the best lens collection for an ILC and an accessory for just about everything, you will be happy with camera.
